Bushfires are always a cause for concern, and the exceptionally dry conditions existing in Queensland from protracted droughts in recent years, mean that further bushfires are inevitable.

A well protected property should, however, be a safe haven for a household during a fire, providing fires that start in and around the building itself are quickly extinguished.

Tips to help you prepare for bushfire season

• Clear sources of fuels and flammable vegetation from around the house for at least 20 metres.
• Make sure your property identification is clearly visible and your property access is suitable for large firefighting appliances.
• Check that firefighting equipment is operational and hoses reach all sides of the building.
• Trim under fences and remove overgrown bushes.
• Clean out gutters and secure any openings to the roof.
• Point LPG relief valves away from structures.
• Fit smoke alarms to each level of your home.
• Learn First Aid and CPR.
• Prepare an evacuation box in case you must leave.
• If you are evacuating; do so early well ahead of any fire or smoke.
• Listen to the radio for advice when bushfires are in your community.
• Remember the emergency number triple zero (000) to report dangerous fires.
