“The Queensland Rural Fire Service’s (RFSQ) capacity to respond in worsening fire seasons is reduced by marked reductions in volunteer (member) retention in rural fire brigades (brigades). This qualitative study explored the volunteering experiences of twelve members. Findings revealed that exclusionary behaviours enacted by brigade leaders, community members, and the RFSQ’s waged staff disrupted members’ motivation to stay. Moreover, the attrition of members was exacerbated by their mistrust of the RFSQ’s leadership. These findings offer insights that could inform policies and practices to foster inclusion and build trust. Only through the experience of respect and recognition will members feel valued.”
