61 Approved PPB Community Defence Grants
Monday, 10 Apr 2017
61 non truck Rural Fire Brigades are receiving letters from the RFBAQ congratulating them on their successful applications for equipment.
At the RFBAQ General Meeting held in Mackay on Saturday 25th March 2017, 62 x PPB (Primary Producer Brigades) Community Defence Grant forms were presented with 1 grant application requiring more information.
Mike Wassing, Deputy Commissioner for Emergency Volunteers, represented QFES and also supported the grants.
While the initial grant process was for 50 x $1,000 available PPB Grants, the RFBAQ and QFES have decided to increase the funding pool to meet the overwhelming demand.
Successful brigades will supply invoices from local suppliers to the RFBAQ who will make payments on behalf of RFBAQ and QFES.
As expected, there are a number of commonly requested types of equipment and the RFBAQ will be engaging with RFSQ to try and find a mechanism that will allow for brigades without bank accounts to locally access these items.
This RFBAQ initiative is the 1st phase of 3 in the "Year of the PPB."
Keep an eye out for the times and dates of Phase 2.

History Behind Grant
It was often thought that PPB's do not need more equipment above slip-on-units and basic Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) as they are landholders who meet their local needs and should be left alone unless they ring in.
However, through our 100 x RFBAQ/Rexel Safety Equipment Grant given out earlier in 2016, it was found that many PPBs want to try and improve their community defence model.
After speaking with Primary Producer Brigade members at Toowoomba Farmfest in June and Ag-Grow in Emerald in July it was found that grants tailored to their needs would greatly benefit PPB brigades.
This RFBAQ initiative is supported by QFES/RFSQ and is the first grant scheme of its type.
The RFBAQ would like for the quotes to come from local businesses so that the grant money can be spent locally and after sales service is supplied from the local community.
An example of sought after equipment that interviewed PPB members raised were:
- 3 x PPB brigades combining applications and applying to buy a shipping container to securely store brigade equipment.
- Chainsaw and appropriate PPE
- Portable UHF radios for use on the fire ground
- Grader cutting edges
- Water coolers to be used on the fire ground
